A Houston elementary school student was allegedly forced to sit on the floor for weeks as punishment for drawing on her desk.
According to Houston’s KHOU, the child’s parents were made aware by the girl’s teacher that her daughter had drawn on her desk, but the teacher failed to report a major detail of the girl’s punishment, “She lost her recess… She went to the principal’s office and then she had to wash the desk and that was it," said her mother. She continued, “I was never told that her desk was removed.”
But according to the Westwood Elementary Schools student, that’s exactly what happened. And as a result, she spent about a month on the floor, completing her assignments and classwork, while her peers sat at their desks. Something her teacher said would continue until the student went to second grade.
This continued until the first-grader told her mother who immediately contacted the school. ”I asked her, ‘Why didn’t you tell me?’” Her mother said the young girl said she was too scared to tell her parents, thinking she’d be in even more trouble. “She thought what she had done was so bad she didn’t deserve to have a desk,” said her mom.
The Spring Branch Independent School District said the teacher responsible for removing the girl’s desk has been reprimanded and released a statement saying, “ The family has been offered multiple opportunities to transfer their child, with her to another teacher within the school or to an elementary school in the district where enrollment is not capped.”
The girl’s parents have transferred her to another school for the upcoming school year. Her mother says the incident has left her with a sense of guilt, “The fact that I sent her there every day not knowing that that’s what she was going into because nobody made me aware, it’s horrible.”
Parents, if anything, this serves as a warning to us that we must involve in our child's school activities and check in from time to time.
